Veggies for my birthday?  Like in, no meat?  Answer — YES!  Veggie Grill quietly opened up a little over two years ago and I never really thought about trying this place out.  Curious, yes, but I just didn’t feel a compelling reason to give it a whirl.  The proprietors of this California-based chain seemed to know where I was coming from, because shortly after they opened up a location here in Beaverton, my workplace received some complimentary dishes for us to try out.  Short story short, I was sold.  I signed up for their Grill Club and have been singing their praises ever since.  I like my meat, but Veggie Grill does a great job of combining different plants with great sauces to make some delicious salads, sandwiches, soups, sides and bowls.  Granted, not everything is a home run, but go enough times and you’ll find some compelling dishes that work really well — and it’s all vegetarian!

For my birthday meal I shared a filling Bombay Bowl with my wife.  This is one of her favorites as she is gluten-free, but I enjoy it just as much as she does.  The menu description is enough for a vote from me:  “Herb-roasted veggies, super grains, steamed kale, cannellini beans, cilantro/green curry sauce with coconut milk, almonds, hemp seeds.”

We ordered from the counter and took it ‘To-Go.’  I had printed out the email coupon earlier in the day, but forgot it sitting on my desk at home.  Fortunately the restaurant will allow you to present the email coupon on your smartphone, so all I had to do was show the cashier the image with barcode and I was good to go.  Five minutes later they called my name and I took it home, where we added a bit of brown rice to fill and stretch out the meal a little bit more between the both of us.  The email coupon expires 14 days from the date sent.  There are two locations in Portland area — one in Beaverton at Cedar Hills Crossing and the other in downtown Portland.  I rate this birthday deal as a definite treat — it’s a great excuse to finally try out a completely vegetarian meal.  Hopefully you’ll like it enough to go again, and not just on your birthday!
