Offer: One free 12 oz shake with purchase
Via: Email message and printable coupon from Arby’s Extras club
Arby’s is one of those restaurants that I tend to forget about in the competitive marketplace of fast food. I remember way back in the 80’s when they had their jingle of Arby’s acronym meaning “America’s Roast Beef, Yes Sir.” And so that’s what I always remembered them for — roast beef sandwiches. When I signed up for their Extras loyalty club, their first offer was (and still is) for a free roast beef sandwich with the purchase of a drink. Cool. So I figured that maybe the birthday offer would be something similar. Well, it turns out that the birthday offer they send out is for a free 12 oz milkshake, as long as you also buy another item that is NOT on their snack menu $1 and $2 items. The milkshakes they offer are vanilla, chocolate, jamoca and a seasonal flavor — this time is was for a Andes mint chocolate swirl.
I planned my Arby’s strategy like this: eat lunch somewhere else, and then go to Arby’s for dessert. The Arby’s dessert menu features turnovers and a chocolate molten lava cake. I ordered the latter to go along with my vanilla milkshake. I had a newbie employee still in training, so he needed some extra help when I presented the coupon. The manager rang me up, I paid my $2.39 for the dessert cake, and a few minutes later I had my dessert. And it was a let down. The vanilla shake was fine, but it was the cake that disappointed and I only ate half of it. It was just overly sweet with too much sugar and it tasted like one of those instant cake convenience foods that you microwave for a minute. So next time I’ll probably just go for a sandwich and fries to go with my shake.
The Arby’s birthday offer is good for 14 days after the date sent, which is about a week before your birthday. With the normal price of the 12 oz shake being $1.19, plus the fact that you have to buy something else to go with it, makes this offer one of the least appealing compared with the deals offered by other restaurants. Arby’s runs coupons pretty frequently and that makes the shake seems like an special birthday afterthought since you can get better coupons and offers pretty easily if you just search Google and then print off those coupons. The one nice aspect of this offer though is the fact that there are ten locations in the Portland area, making it easy enough to take advantage of. Overall though, this is one birthday offer that I feel I would not miss out on.
Verdict: Not That Special, pass if you want to
