Famous Dave’s wasn’t really that famous to me when they opened up in Portland about six years ago.  I did finally manage to get a taste of their St. Louis-style ribs, Texas-style brisket and other BBQ items to garner some good reviews from my tastebuds.  Though the pricing is juat a tad on the higher side, the birthday offer they present can soften the blow to the wallet with a buy one entree, get one entree for half off.

One way to save money at Famous Dave’s is to take advantage of their lunch specials, available Monday – Friday from 11:00am – 4:00pm.  We went in just after 3:30pm and were given the regular dinner menu by the hostess.  When our waiter came by to take drink orders, we asked about the lunch menus.  He glanced at the clock, then disappeared and returned with the requested menus in hand.  The special lunch menu offers combinations that include a main dish, a side dish and one cornbread muffin.  Some specials allow for a second main of meat for a few dollars more, but we weren’t too hungry so we just stuck with one main dish each.  We placed our orders and the waiter returned a few minutes later with a small complimentary portion of their barbeque potato chips.  Each table provides five different barbeque sauces to add to your food, so the chips gave us a good excuse to try each one of these sauces.  Our lunches arrived shortly thereafter — Lisa ordered the stuffed baked potato with beef brisket while I dug into the St. Louis-Style Spareribs.  The food was great and even though we ordered the smaller lunch portion sizes, we still managed to take some leftovers home.  Our waiter accepted my birthday coupon and returned with our bill, minus $4.50 for half of one of the entrees.  Tip:  the birthday coupon allows for a maximum discount of $15, so if you want to go to dinner and order the more expensive and bigger combo portions, go right ahead!

Famous Dave’s has two locations in the Portland area, one down in Tualatin and the other by the airport at Cascade Station.  They used to have smaller outlet in Beaverton called Famous Dave’s BBQ Shack, but that outpost only lasted less than two years before permanently shutting down.  The remaining restaurants can be very crowded on the weekends, but both seat a lot of diners and they also have a full bar area to escape to as well.  Famous Dave’s will send the birthday coupon via email about a week before your birthday and then you’ll have 14 days from the date sent to use it.  Overall this birthday offer is a definite treat — it’s not the best value offer out there, but the good barbeque, good service and lively atmosphere make this well worth a birthday visit.
