Business: Black Bear Diner
Offer: Special “Bearthday” Breakfast
Via: Email message from Bear Lovers E-Club
Ah, Black Bear Diner. Known mainly for their hearty breakfasts, it is no wonder that they offer up a special “Bearthday” breakfast for members of their loyalty club. Seeing that this is one of only a handful of breakfast birthday deals offered, my wife and I decided to go in on a Sunday morning with our Sunday paper in hand to enjoy a nice leisurely breakfast.
We played it smart and arrived early enough to avoid the Sunday after-church crowd waits. We were seated immediately, served up some coffee, and ordered from their newspaper menu. Breakfast is quite extensive, as the restaurant has portions both big and small to suit various appetites, plus a good range of dishes from omelettes and scrambles, to egg combos and griddled items. In prior visits, we’ve really enjoyed their corned beef hash, but today my wife was hankering more for an omelette. She ordered the bacon omelette with hash browns and a biscuit. Knowing how big the breakfasts are, my plan was just to share some of her food and get myself some pancakes or a waffle.
The email birthday message reads “Sweet Cream Pancakes OR Waffle 2 eggs, 2 bacon OR 2 sausage links.” I read this and assumed that if I ordered the pancakes or waffle, that’s all I would get. And I was fine with that. So when the waitress came by to take our order, I presented my email certificate and went ahead with the waffle. For just $1.99 more, I could add whipped cream and either strawberries or blueberries. That sounded good, but I’ve been disappointed before at other restaurants when the fruit ends up being of the canned or processed variety. So I asked “Is the fruit fresh?” and she replied “Yes, it is.” Sweet! I was pretty happy, but the server surprised me when she continued to take my order….”How would you like your eggs done? And with bacon or sausage….” You mean I get those items as well? Well shazaam, maybe I don’t need to share in any of my wife’s omelette!
The wait for the food was not long. The waffle was just perfect with the fresh strawberries and whipped cream. It was big enough and filling enough that I only ate one of the sausages and half of my eggs, boxing the rest for breakfast the next day. Lisa also took home half of her breakfast plate. With my free entree already taken off the bill, our meal came to $14.97 and add in a $5 tip, our breakfast for today (and tomorrow) came to under $20. Overall a great deal, as the normal price of the “Bearthday” breakfast comes to $8.99. I rate this birthday offer a Must-Have, simply because you have to try the buttermilk and sweet cream batter that they use to make their pancakes and waffles. The portions are generous, service is friendly and efficient, and the food is fresh, of good quality and tastes great. There are only two locations in the Portland area — one in Gresham and one in Beaverton — but take a weekend morning to take advantage of this birthday deal and celebrate with a delicious breakfast!
