Time to eat, all-you-can eat style!
Hometown Buffet isn’t exactly considered the Shangri-La of the culinary landscape, and because of this my wife and I only dine here once a year. Yep, once a year, you got it, during my birthday month. And while I agree that the restaurant seems to emphasis quantity over quality, I have noticed that the food has actually improved over the last several years and there are some pretty tasty dishes that you can focus on (instead of the all carbs carbs carbs).
We went in on a busy evening and after a few minutes of waiting in line, we finally made it to the cashier and ordered up two admissions. I gave the cashier my birthday coupon for a free adult buffet, and she cheerfully accepted it and rang us in. She tried twice to upsell us the drinks (soda! coffee! milk! Icees!), but we usually drink water anyway so we declined the offer. She handed us the receipt and two water cups, and then we were free to choose a seat on our own.
Hometown Buffet’s food stations are laid out like little islands, with hot foods towards the front and the colder salad and soup items towards the back of the restaurant. They also have a carving station, drink station, dessert station with ice cream, and a condiment bar that also has Mexican food to make tacos and nachos. I shall not bore you with the details of my gluttony, nor the length of time we spent there (um, let’s just say it was under 90 minutes). But I will say that they do have enough food variety that should appeal to most people. The salad bar was adequate with many dressing options, and they did offer orange wedges, sliced cantaloupe and canned peaches. For the meat lovers, the carvery featured sliced roast beef, sausages and pork ribs slathered in barbecue sauce. A new concept that the restaurant has introduced are individual portion sizes like chicken pot pie and steak bites with mashed potatoes, served in their own little dish. These individualized items were strengths of the spread, as they came out hot and fresh from the kitchen pretty frequently. There are plenty of fried foods (onion rings, fish, waffle fries, etc.), carb items (mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, pizza & pasta) and comfort dishes such as meatloaf and chicken. And of course there are plenty of sweets from the dessert bar — pies, cakes, cookies, puddings and ice cream. There should be no reason to leave this place hungry!
Alas, much to my wife’s joy, we finally left — I must have gained five pounds in over an hour (she ate one plate and one small dessert and called it good). Yes, I ate too much, but remember, this is my once a year pilgrimage, so of course I’m going to get my fill.
Hometown Buffet has four locations in the Portland – Vancouver metro area. Although Hometown Buffet is open for lunch seven days a week and for breakfast on the weekends, the birthday offer is only valid for one free adult dinner buffet when another one is purchased. You don’t have to get the drinks, but if you like your soda pop and other liquids, it’s only another $2.49. You can usually find Hometown Buffet coupons online and in advertising mailers that are almost, but not quite as good as the buy one get one free dinner deal. However, the birthday offer is valid for about 2 weeks so you’ll have plenty of time to use it. Overall, this birthday offer is a good value and you can definitely get your money’s worth, but just don’t expect a gourmet dining experience!
