It’s my Birthday Month! And I’m taking advantage of all the birthday deals available to me by attempting to get one birthday deal every day. Please read more about my mission in my “About” page. On we go!!
Business: International House of Pancakes (IHOP)
Offer: One order of Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity® Pancakes or one order of World Famous Pancakes from regular menu
Via: Printed email message from IHOP Pancake Revolution club
The International House of Pancakes, aka IHOP, is a familiar and popular restaurant well known for their namesake pancakes. Customers have the choice to enjoy four different types of syrup available at each table — boysenberry, marionberry, old fashion and butter pecan (prior years I also recall strawberry and blueberry, maybe they’ll make another appearance someday). The IHOP birthday offer is available by joining their “Pancake Revolution” club, and it is sent via email a week before your birthday and valid for 14 days after date sent. Just print out the email and show it to your server when placing your order. You don’t have to order another entree or even buy a drink, just bring your ID and a hungry appetite!
We went in on a very early weekday morning and the place had only eight or so customers. We were seated immediately and I read through the birthday coupon fine print: “Valid for one order of Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity Pancakes from regular menu OR one order of our World Famous Pancakes from our regular menu.” It was not valid with any combo meals or other promotions — basically it was only good for a free plate of pancakes. I was prepared to go ahead with the Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity Pancakes, but when the server came by to take our order, I showed her my birthday coupon and inquired about it. She explained that if I ordered a different menu item that was priced over the value of the regular pancake dishes, then I could just pay the difference. That was great news since I was drawn to their special menu of all-you-can eat pancake combinations with 2 eggs, hash browns and choice of meat. It was the same price as the Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity pancakes so it didn’t cost me anymore money. We placed our order and soon enough our breakfasts were delivered.
The food was just as expected — perfectly adequate, tasty and good portions — nothing mind blowing, but solid as breakfast staples can get. Again, the real draw is the syrup flavors, whereby I sampled each one on one pancake and then chose my favorite to pour all over the other pancake. Ironically, although I did choose the all-you-can eat variety, I didn’t have anymore room in my stomach to request additional pancakes. IHOP has six locations in the Portland – Vancouver area, and some of them are open 24 hours, so you can conceivably redeem your free pancakes at any time of day. The IHOP birthday offer is a definite treat, made even better if your server allows you to order a different menu item and just pay the difference. Just ask, and if the answer is ‘No,’ at least you can still enjoy a plate of free pancakes!
