With over 100 years of history behind it, the Venetian Theatre is fully functioning theater, bar and restaurant located in the heart of downtown Hillsboro.  Seating 400, it is the home of Bag and Baggage Productions and also hosts evenings of movie screenings, special events (ie football bowl games, Oscars, etc.), touring performers, local musicians, OMSI Science Pub lectures and much more.  It is a great venue to take in the performances, and it is also a great place to have a bite before or afterwards.  The bistro features drinks, happy hour discounts, lunch, dinner and dessert in a comfortable space inside.  When the weather is cooperating, they can open up for outdoor seating as well.
The Venetian Theatre and Bistro serves up a great birthday offer for celebrants — a free entree up to a $15.99 value with proof of ID.  If you happen to order one of the entrees over that price point, you just pay the difference.  My wife and I came in during an early midweek evening and were seated immediately.  We placed our drink orders and perused the menu.  They have appetizers, salads, a soup of the day, a variety of pasta dishes, pizzas, burgers and main courses.  On my special evening, I opted for the homemade stuffed meatloaf.  It was accompanied by mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables, plus a garlic roll and either soup or salad.  I went with the soup, which on this evening was Cream of Broccoli.  My wife ordered the flat iron steak and the soup.  I was warned beforehand that the meatloaf would take at least 20 minutes, so we were prepared for the wait and just enjoyed the soup and garlic rolls and the ambiance of the restored space.
Our food came out hot and fresh, and both entrees were big enough to split and take home leftovers.  Service was friendly and professional, and the dining room was well populated but not super busy.  Since we had a movie to catch, we declined the dessert menu.  We received our check and my meatloaf entree was taken off the bill, a birthday gift compliments of the house.  This is the second year I have had a birthday dinner here, and it is a definite treat because the menu is appealing, the food is cooked just right, the service spot on and the atmosphere is conducive for quiet conversations in a go-your-own pace manner.  The convenient aspect is that you do not need to print out a coupon or sign up for some loyalty club — just go in on the day of your birthday and show your ID for your free meal!
